Based on an original plot by JK Rowling, Tiffany, and Thorne, the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was written by Jack Thorne. The story follows Harry Potter's son, Albus Severus Potter, who has risen to the position of head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.

Since its debut, critics have praised Harry Potter and the Cursed Child almost universally. The Palace Theatre was the scene of the world premiere of the original West End play on June 7, 2016.

On April 21, 2018, the Lyric Theatre on Broadway debuted a new musical. At the 2018 Tony Honors, that production took home six honors, including Best Play out of ten total nominations. On February 23, 2019, a performance in Australia premiered at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne.

The play's original production consisted of two parts that could be seen on the same day (in the afternoon and evening) or on separate nights. For further appearances on Broadway in November 2021, the play was re-staged in June 2021 as a single 3.5-hour presentation.

Productions in San Francisco, Melbourne, Toronto, and Tokyo switched to the one-act play in 2022, with Hamburg following suit in 2023. The only place where you can see the original two-part play is at the West End performance.
