Youssou N’Dour (October 1, 1959) is a Senegalese actor, politician, businessman, musician, composer, singer, and songwriter. He was described as “perhaps the most famous singer alive” in much of Africa and, of course, Senegal by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004. N’Dour has been a Minister of Tourism of Senegal from April 2012 to September 2013. He helped develop a popular Senegalese music style known by all Senegambians as mbalax. It is a music genre.

N’Dour joined Super Diamono while he was just 15 years old, and in 1975, he went on a tour with them in West Africa. At 16, he also signed a contract with the Star Band of Ibra Kasse in Dakar at Kasse’s Miami club. There he would become a sensation. He is also known as one of the most celebrated African musicians in history. N’Dour has won an international fan base of millions due to his sensational mix of music genres ranging from soul, jazz, hip hop to Cuban rumba.

N’Dour has collaborated with several big names of the west such as Bruce Cockburn, Lou Reed, Dido, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Branford Marsalis, James Newton Howard, Tracy Chapman, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Wyclef Jean, Neneh Cherry, Bran Van 3000, Alan Stivelli, Sting, Axelle Red, and Peter Gabriel. N’Dour also wrote the official anthem of the 1998 FIFA World Cup along with Axelle Red. Some of his most recent albums include Mbalax (2021), history (2019), Respect (2018), Seeni Valeurs (2017), Africa Rekk (2016), Dakar – Kingston (2010), and several others.
