Gerald Maxwell Rivera (May 23, 1973) is an American record producer, singer, and songwriter. He is professionally known as Maxwell. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. The 17-year-old Brooklynite started writing music after being given a cheap Casio keyboard by a friend. Maxwell began teaching himself to play multiple instruments after becoming a fan of the "jheri curl soul" sound popularized by early 1980s R&B artists like Patrice Rushen, S.O.S. Band, and Rose Royce.

Maxwell dropped "Lake by the Ocean," his first solo single in six years, and his highly anticipated fifth studio album, blackSUMMERS'night, on the same day (April 7, 2016). On May 5, 2016, he appeared on Stephen Colbert's The Late Show to sing it. After a hiatus of seven years, he finally made his return to television. The full-length album debuted at no. Three on the Billboard 200, upon its July 1, 2016 release, received largely positive reviews from music reviewers.

Maxwell announced a series of upcoming appearances in April 2019, when he was digitally re-releasing his prior E.P.s. In September 2019, Maxwell performed at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra for four nights. In September of 2023, a three-night run by Maxwell at the Hollywood Bowl marked the end of the Summer Season at the venue.
