Wilco, a hit band from Chicago, Illinois, plays alternative rock. After lead vocalist Jay Farrar left the band Uncle Tupelo in 1994, the surviving members decided to establish a new band. After a decade together, vocalist Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt are left from Wilco's original lineup.

Tweedy, Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche have been together since 2004. Wilco has put out twelve studio albums, a double live album, and four collaborative efforts (three with Billy Bragg and one with The Minus 5).

The debate around Wilco's fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2001), attracted media attention. After recording the album, Reprise Records decided to drop Wilco from their roster.

Several contemporary alternative rock bands have cited Wilco as influencing their music. Bill Fay, The Beatles, and television are just a few artists and genres that have influenced Wilco's sound.

Wilco signed with Nonesuch Records in 2002 after the label heard samples of Foxtrot on the band's website. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, a film by Sam Jones, chronicles the album's making by following the band as they write and record the songs.

With over 670,000 copies sold, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is Wilco's best-selling album. Wilco's fifth studio album, 2004's A Ghost Is Born, was nominated for two Grammys and won Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Album. In September 2023, Wilco released Cousin, their thirteenth studio album.
