The football Bulls represent the University of South Florida. In 1997, play began for the Bulls, members of the American Athletic Conference (The American) in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, is the site of the team's home games. The Bulls lost their first two games of the 2021 season, against No. 25 NC State and No. 13 Florida, before winning their next game, 38-17, against Florida A&M.

After starting the 2022 season 1-8, South Florida let go of head coach Scott and defensive coordinator Bob Shoop on November 6. Linebackers coach Ernie Sims was promoted to defensive coordinator, while special teams coordinator Daniel Da Prato took over as temporary head coach.

Alex Golesh was named the sixth head coach in USF history on December 4, 2022. Golesh was a nominee for the Broyles Award after the 2022 regular season at the University of Tennessee when he served as offensive coordinator and tight ends coordinator. The Board of Trustees of USF approved money for a new football stadium on campus in June 2023. The launch of the stadium is planned for the year 2026.
