In 1896, Connecticut fielded its first team, and until 1999, the state competed in Division I-AA. After two years of preparation, the Huskies joined Division I-A as an official team in 2002. The group competed as an independent from 2000 to 2003. UConn brought in Jim L. Mora to take over for Edsall. Mora led the Huskies to an unexpected 6-6 record in his debut season, highlighted by an upset victory over then-No. 19 Liberty. UConn was bowl-eligible again for the first time since 2015, and the Huskies faced off against Marshall in a rematch in the 2022 Myrtle Beach Bowl. In 1897, the Yankee Conference rivalry was born. Since UConn joined the FBS in 1999 and UMass stayed in the FCS, the rivalry between the two schools has been dormant. UMass's first game in the FBS was a 37–0 loss against the Huskies, reviving an old rivalry. Since 2018, each institution has won two of the four competitions.
