About The Moth

The Moth is a group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling since 1997. The Moth presents a wide range of theme-based storytelling events abroad and nationally. The event often features prominent cultural and literary personalities. The Moth also offers a weekly podcast that was launched on national public radio in 2009, and in 2010, The Moth Radio Hour won the Peabody Award. The Moth was actually founded by novelist and poet George Dawes Green. He wanted to recreate the feeling of sultry summer evenings in his native state of Georgia. Green's original group consisted of storytellers who called themselves “The Moths," which was taken to New York by Green. Storytellers who have told their stories on this platform include Elna Baker, Margaret Cho, Kimya Dawson, Thomas Dolby, Rachel Dratch, Ophira Eisenberg, Malcolm Gladwell, Adam Gopnik, Ethan Hawke, Lisa P. Jackson, Christopher Hitchens, Avan Kay Jones, Garrison Keillor, Padma Lakshmi, Faye Lane, Janna Levin, David Chang, Ed Gavagan, George Plimpton, Michael Massimino, Joe Lockhart, Annie Proulx, Cynthia Riggs, Daisy Rosario, Lili Taylor, and countless others. The Moth: 50 True Stories reached number 22 on The New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Best-Seller List. Additionally, Occasional Magic: True Stories About Defying the Impossible (2019), and All These Wonders: True Stories about Facing the Unknown (2017) reached number 12 on The New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Best-Seller List.

Essential Event-Day Checklist

Before You Leave

  • Digital Tickets: Download tickets to your phone's wallet now. Venue Wi-Fi is notoriously unreliable.
  • ID Check: Bring a valid photo ID; many venues require it for entry or "Will Call" pickup.
  • Bag Policy: Most venues enforce clear bag policies or limits (typically A4 size or smaller). Check the specific venue site to avoid being turned away.
  • Cash & Cards: While many venues are now cashless, bring some cash as a backup.

Pro-Tips

  • Power Up: Bring a portable power bank. Using your phone for video and ride-sharing will drain your battery fast.
  • Hearing Safety: Use high-fidelity earplugs to enjoy the event while protecting your hearing.
  • Hydration & Energy: Eat a full meal and stay hydrated beforehand.

Dress for Success

  • Footwear: Wear broken-in sneakers or boots. You could be standing for 3–5 hours; avoid new shoes.
  • Layer Up: Wear light layers (flannel or light jacket). Venues can range from chilly to very hot.
  • Style: Be yourself, but it always helps to have pockets or a small crossbody bag to keep essentials secure and hands-free.

Logistics & Safety

  • Arrive Early: Get there 60 minutes before doors to beat the merch and security lines.
  • Transport: Pre-book your ride share or scout parking garages in advance to avoid post-show surges.
  • Stay Safe: Identify your nearest exit upon arrival and designate a meeting spot for your group.
