The B-52s are a group hailing from Athens, Georgia, which was founded in 1976 and went under the name B-52 (with an apostrophe) until 2008. When the band first started, Fred Schneider was on vocals and percussion, Kate Pierson was on keyboards and synth bass, Cindy Wilson was on vocals and percussion, Ricky Wilson was on guitar, and Keith Strickland was on drums, guitar, and keyboards. 

Strickland transitioned from drums to lead guitar after Ricky Wilson's 1985 death from an AIDS-related illness. The band has expanded its studio album and live show lineup by adding new musicians. "Love Shack," "Summer of Love," "Whammy Kiss," "Private Idaho," "Wig," "(Meet) The Flintstones," "Roam," "Planet Claire," "Rock Lobster," and "Party Out of Bounds." are just a few of the B-52s' numerous popular songs. 

Three Grammy Awards were up for grabs: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 1990 and 1991, Best Alternative Music Album in 1992, and Best Pop Performance by a Solo Artist in 1991. The band declared their retirement from performing in April 2022. Not long after November 2022, a residence in Sin City was scheduled for 2023.

Bernard Gendron described the band's sound as evoking a "thrift shop aesthetic" because of its heavy reliance on junk culture, rock & roll, and pop music from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Schneider, Pierson, and Wilson's guitar- and keyboard-driven sound, set apart from their contemporaries by Ricky Wilson's unusual guitar tunings on their earlier albums, and Schneider's often humorous Sprechgesang contrast with Wilson's and Pierson's melodic harmonies, are trademarks.
