The idea of having the Formula One World Championship race in Miami was initially suggested to the city in 2018. The planned dates for the race, which took place around PortMiami, were set for 2019.

Hard Rock Stadium was proposed as the site for the 2021 race after issues occurred due to PortMiami's development and building plans. After that, the track relocated from downtown to the vicinity of Hard Rock Stadium and the parking lots adjacent to the stadium. The event was announced in April 2021 for the 2022 season but did not make it to the 2021 schedule. That year, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix occurred on a street circuit in Jeddah.
