The annual Burning Man festival in the western United States is a week-long celebration of "community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance" in the desert. The festival's name stems from the Saturday night before Labor Day ritual when a huge wooden effigy known as the Man is burned in a symbolic gesture. In 1991, the festival moved to Black Rock City, a temporary settlement built in the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles north-northeast of Reno.

Larry Harvey and Jerry James, the creators of the first Man, held a modest gathering on Baker Beach in San Francisco on June 22, 1986. Since then, celebrating for the entire week leading up to Labor Day has become an annual tradition. Throughout its existence, the event has seen steadily rising attendance—78,850 persons joined in 2023.

In 2022, organizers imposed a cap on the event's capacity, lowering the number of people who could participate. There can be at most 87,000 people at the 2022 event, period. The 80,000-person cap on the playa at any moment was maintained for 2019.
