Karim Kharbouch, aka French Montana (November 9, 1984), is a Moroccan-American rapper. He was born in Morocco and emigrated to the United States at 13. When he first came to the United States, Kharbouch spoke only Moroccan Darija Arabic and French. He picked up English on the streets and at Roosevelt and Lehman High School in the Bronx. Although his father had determined they would return to Casablanca after two years of trying, his mother had stayed behind with their children because she saw no future for them there. Under the alias "Young French," French Montana started in the rap game as a combat rapper. Inspired by the success of the Smack DVD series at the time, French and his close buddy Cams produced a series of street DVDs in 2002 titled Cocaine City. The show focused on street music and hip-hop beef and featured talks with prominent and up-and-coming rappers and celebrities. At first, he used the DVDs to promote himself as an underground musician named Young French. He featured his songs, freestyles, and collaborations with other musicians. Included in the first book were artists such as Pee Wee Kirkland and Remy Ma. What was meant to build an audience soon became one of the most popular street DVDs. From 2002 to 2010, 14 books were published over eight years, and several pictures were made as spinoffs.
