About George Benson

George Washington Benson is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He began his professional career as a jazz guitarist at the age of 19. Benson was born and reared in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Hill District. He began playing the ukulele at the age of seven at a corner pharmacy store, for which he was paid a few bucks. He began playing guitar at eight years old at an unauthorized bar on Friday and Saturday evenings. He began recording at the age of nine. Benson rose to fame in the 1960s as a young prodigy performing soul-jazz alongside Jack McDuff and others. He subsequently went on to have a successful solo career, performing jazz, pop, R&B, and scat singing. Throughout the 1980s, his concerts were well-attended, and he still maintains a sizable fan base. In 1976, his album Breezin' was certified triple-platinum after debuting at number one on the Billboard album chart. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been bestowed for Benson. Benson was featured on the Gorillaz track "Humility" in May 2018. Benson's signing to Mascot Label Group was made public on July 12, 2018. The New York Times Magazine named George Benson among hundreds of musicians whose recordings were destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire on June 25, 2019. Benson has released several studio albums throughout his career, including his debut album, The New Boss Guitar of George Benson (1964). Some of his other studio albums are Classic Love Songs (2010), The Essential Collection (2011), and The Ultimate Collection (2015).
