Major Lazer is an electronic dance music trio that is based in Kingston, Jamaica. The current lineup of the trio consists of Diplo (record producer), Walshy Fire (DJ), and Ape Drums (DJ). Major Lazer was formed in 2008, and the founding members were Diplo and Switch. Switch left the group three years later in 2011. The music spans numerous genres, including moombahton, house, soca, reggaeton, dancehall, and mixing reggae.

Major Lazer released its debut album entitled “Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do” two years after its inception, released on Downtown Records on June 16, 2009. This album was recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica. Many guest vocals were featured in the album, including Leftside, Prince Zimboo, T.O.K, Mapei, Turbulence, Mr. Vegas, Amanda Blank, Nina Sky, Busy Signal, Ward 21, Vybz Kartel, and Santigold. The first single in the album was entitled “Hold the Line,” directed by Eric Wareheim, and was nominated for an MTV Video Award in the Breakthrough Video category.

Major Lazer was featured for the first time in June 2009 on the cover of “The Fader.” The trio performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival in July 2010 and at Sasquatch Music Festival on May 30, 2011. Major Lazer has worked with a few record labels, including Secretly Canadian, Downtown, and Mad Decent. The trio’s other notable studio albums include Free the Universe (2013), Peace is the Mission (2015), and Music is the Weapon (2020).
