Misdemeanor (July 1, 1971), whose real name is Melissa Arnette "Missy" Elliott, is a record producer, singer, and rapper. A member of the R&B female group Sista in the '90s, she got her start in the industry as a member of the bigger musical collective Swing Mob, headed by DeVante Swing of Jodeci. The album was her big break and was well-received by critics and listeners alike; it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and gave birth to the top-20 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Sock It 2 Me" (with Da Brat).

Her sixth studio album, The Cookbook (2005), debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and produced the top three hit "Lose Control" (with Fatman Scoop and Ciara) as well as matching "Under Construction" as her highest charting album. Her first release in fourteen years was the 2019 extended play Iconology, which came after a lengthy break.

On Billboard's list of the 100 best music video performers of all time in 2020, she was rated No. 5. A star was bestowed to her in 2021 by the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As of her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, she had never been nominated or honored as a female rapper. Elliot made an appearance on Skrillex and Mr. Oizo's "RATATA" (the second track on "Quest For Fire" LP), which was produced by Skrillex and released on February 17, 2023.
