Oregon Symphony Information
The Oregon Symphony is a famous symphony orchestra from the U.S., with its home base in Portland. The Portland Symphony Society was established in 1896. It is one of the oldest orchestras in the Western United States and the sixth oldest in the U.S. overall. The group's permanent home is the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon's downtown Cultural District.
On October 30, 1896, W.H. Kinross conducted a group of 33 musicians who were the forerunners of the orchestra at the Marquam Grand Theatre. Joseph Haydn's Surprise Symphony was one of the initial selections. In 1899, the orchestra was already putting on an annual concert series. The first tour of the state by the orchestra took place in 1902.
In 2003, the orchestra was nominated for its first Grammy. Recorded by Albany Records in January 2000, "Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra" by Oregon composer Tomas Svoboda included principal drummer Niel DePonte. He was nominated for outstanding instrumental soloist performance with orchestra.
Carlos Kalmar has been the music director of the orchestra since 2003. The orchestra announced in April 2008 that their contract with Kalmar as music director would be extended until the 2012–2013 season. The orchestra announced in February 2020 that Kalmar will step down as music director at the end of the 2020–2021 season.
David Danzmayr made his conducting debut with the orchestra in 2018. He made another guest appearance in 2019. Danzmayr was named the orchestra's new music director for the 2021–2022 season in February.
