The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) is a famous American orchestra based in San Francisco, California. In 1911, it was founded as one of the major symphonies. Since 1980, the orchestra has called the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall home in the city's Hayes Valley district. The organization's key components are the San Francisco Symphony Chorus (1972) and SFS. The orchestra has received multiple awards over the previous 26 years, including an Emmy Award and 15 Grammy Awards.

Michael Tilson Thomas was the orchestra's music director since 1995, although he shifted his tenure in 2020. ESA-Pekka Salonen took over as the next music director of the SFS. In 2004, 2012, and 2015, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted the orchestra as a special guest. The orchestra announced in December 2018 that Salonen had been chosen as its new music director, beginning with the 2020–2021 season and on a five-season starting contract.

Conductor-composer Henry Hadley led the first concerts of the SFS. In the beginning, there were 60 musicians in the orchestra. The SFS was the first orchestra that featured symphonic radio broadcasts in 1926; it was even heard in syndicated radio broadcasts on over 300 radio stations in 2003.

The San Francisco Symphony tours the United States, Asia, and Europe. The orchestra also went on a Japanese tour, which Josef Krips led in 1968. The East Coast tour was the recent highly successful tour by the SFS that took place in April 2016.
