Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (February 16, 1990) is a Canadian record producer, singer, songwriter, and actor. His stage name is The Weeknd. He uploaded a few songs on YouTube anonymously in 2010 under the name “The Weeknd.” In 2011, he released several mixtapes such as Echoes of Silence and Thursday and House of Balloons that brought him some major recognition and fanbase.
The Weeknd released his debut album “Kiss Land” on September 10, 2013. His next album, “Beauty Behind the Madness” was released on August 28, 2015. Beauty Behind the Madness became his first album that topped the Billboard 200, and it’s singles “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face” gained mega-success by topping the Billboard Hot 100. He has also been the only artist to hold all top three positions on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart. The album has also won the Best Urban Contemporary Album in 56th Grammy Awards and was nominated in the category for Album of the Year.
On November 25, 2016, The Weeknd released its third album called “Starboy.” The title song from the album of the same name reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, another project named My Dear Melancholy, which was his debut EP as well reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
On the whole, The Weeknd has won nine Billboard Music Awards, three Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and nine Juno Awards, whereas also got nominated for an Academy Award. Some notable tours by The Weeknd include King of the Fall Tour (2014), Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour (2017), and The Madness Fall Tour (2015).
