For more than 38 years, the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo—founded by Lu Vason—has honored the Westward expansion of African American cowboys and cowgirls. The 1870-born cowboy Bill Pickett, whose ancestry included African and Cherokee Indian ancestry, is commemorated by the name. He invented The bulldogging technique, allowing a cowboy to tackle a steer by grasping its horns and hurling them to the ground. He became famous as "The Bulldogger" for this innovation.

An event revitalizes the community by bringing together its culture, history, and activity. All ages can enjoy this rodeo thanks to its historical features and re-enactments.
