Brigham Young University (BYU) competes in American football, and the BYU Cougars Team is their representative. BYU is a private institution. Since their founding in 1922, the Cougars have won an impressive 22 conference titles and one national title (1984). The home games are played at Lavell Edwards Stadium, honoring the team's legendary head coach.

Throughout its history, the squad has participated in several different athletic leagues. However, since July 1, 2011, they have competed as an FBS independent.

The application of Brigham Young University (BYU) to join the Big Twelve Conference was unanimously accepted on September 10, 2021. July 1, 2023, marked the formal beginning of BYU's membership in the Big 12.
