The University of Houston fields a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football team called the Houston Cougars. The name "Houston" or "UH" (pronounced "U of H") is widely used to refer to the squad. Hawaii now competes in the Big 12 Conference for football. TDECU Stadium, where the Cougars' home games have been played since the 2014 season, was constructed at the former Robertson Stadium, where they played from 1941 to 1950 and 1997 to 2012.

Several Cougars football greats, including a Heisman Trophy winner, have been inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame, and the team has won eleven conference titles overall. After a 7-5 regular season, the Coogs were eliminated from contention for the AAC title game.

They were invited to their first-ever game, the Independence Bowl, where they defeated the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 23-16 despite playing in sub-freezing temperatures. The Houston Cougars made public their decision to join the Big 12 Conference in September 2021. The Big 12 did this as part of its strategy to recover from the defection of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. In September of 2023, the Cougars joined the Big 12 Conference.
