The Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team is one of the teams that the University of Iowa runs officially. The Hawkeyes have finished 29th in NCAA tournament play, 8th in the National Invitation Tournament, 3rd in Big Ten tournament play, and 8th in Big Ten regular season conference titles.

The basketball program at Iowa saw a revival in the 1980s and 1990s, thanks to Lute Olson, George Raveling, and Tom Davis. During this time, the Hawkeyes enjoyed widespread success. Olson guided the Hawkeyes to their final Big Ten regular season title and a trip to the Final Four in 1980.

Along with the Iowa women's basketball, wrestling, and volleyball teams, they presently play in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which has 15,400 seats.

The Hawkeyes' practice facilities before the 1983 opening of Carver-Hawkeye Arena were the Iowa Armory and the Iowa Field House, which are currently in use by the school's gymnastics teams. Before their 2006 loss to in-state rival Northern Iowa, the Hawkeyes had amassed a school-record 21 home victories.

With victories against rival Iowa State (84-68) and 12th-ranked Texas Tech (72-61) among their 9-2 non-conference record in 2019–20, Iowa finished the season strong. The Iowa Hawkeyes were captained by the play of star center Luka Garza, who received many honors with his 23.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game average.

With a 20-11 record and conference victories over #12 Maryland (67-49), Garza would go on to win the Big Ten Player of the Year, the Sporting News Men's College Basketball Player of the Year, the Pete Newell Big Man Award, the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, and consensus All-American honors throughout his time as a Hawkeye.
