Among the most successful NCAA Division I athletic programs is the men's wrestling team of the University of Iowa. With 24 national championships, the Hawkeyes are second all-time in NCAA history. They have also won the Big Ten Conference 37 times. The University of Iowa wrestling program started in 1911 with a dual match versus Nebraska, coached by the school's first head coach, E.G. Schroeder. Dan Gable became the head coach at the University of Iowa in 1976 after serving as an assistant coach and wrestler at Iowa State University.

Among the most dominant teams in NCAA history was the 2010 Iowa squad. The squad was undefeated in dual meets. Iowa scored a perfect score in eight of those duals, including 49-0 against Northwestern, 36-0 against Michigan State, and 36-0 against Big Ten rival Michigan. With scores of 29-6, 28-9, and 32-3, they also swept Penn State, Minnesota, and Ohio State.

For the first time in the program's history, the University of Iowa wrestling team sold out of season tickets in 2021. In 2019–20, Iowa set a new NCAA average attendance record with 12,568 people across seven home games, keeping them in first place for the fourteenth year. In the 2020–21 school year, official attendance records were not maintained. Iowa averaged over 8,000 spectators for the 12th consecutive season in 2019–20. Additionally, no other program had ever had more than 10,000 spectators attend a home dual in NCAA history.
