Located in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the Kentucky Oaks is a yearly Grade I stakes event that attracts three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies. Currently, the course of the race at Churchill Downs is 1+1/8 miles (1,800 m), and the horses weigh 121 pounds (55 kg). Every year, the Friday preceding the Kentucky Derby is when the Kentucky Oaks takes place. A huge lily garland blanket and $750,000 (out of a total $1,250,000 prize pool) go to the victor, earning the event the moniker "Lillies for the Fillies." The victor receives a silver Kentucky Oaks Trophy.

On May 19, 1875, under the name of the Louisville Jockey Club, Churchill Downs hosted the inaugural running of the Kentucky Oaks. Along with the Falls City Handicap, the Clark Handicap, and the Kentucky Derby, this race was also founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. There have never been two sporting events in the United States with a longer history of continuous competition than the Kentucky Oaks and Derby.

An annual race held at Epsom Downs, Epsom, Surrey, UK, known as the Epsom Oaks, has inspired the Kentucky Oaks since its inception in 1779. The horse Vinaigrette won the 1+1/2 mile (2.4 km) race in the first race, with a time of 2:39+3/4. The winner took home $1,175. The annual Kentucky Oaks has been going strong ever since. The 2020 epidemic postponed the Kentucky Oaks from May 1 until September 4.
