The Liberty Flames are the college football team for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Liberty is a private Christian university. The Flames are part of Conference USA in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. It was reported in July 2017 that the program, which had previously competed in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), would begin transitioning to the highest level of NCAA football. 

In 2018, the Flames joined the FBS as a provisional member; in 2019, they became full FBS members and were granted bowl status. In 2020, Liberty was ranked for the first time in school history by the AP at No. 25. The Liberty Flames would end the 2019 season with an 8-5 record. They would qualify for and win their inaugural bowl game as a full-fledged FBS school. 

After starting the 2020 season with a perfect 6-0 record, Liberty was ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time in school history. In 2020, Liberty went on to go 10-1 and end the year ranked 17th in the AP Top 25 Poll. After weeks of negotiations, conversations, and speculations, Freeze left Liberty on November 28, 2022, to become the head coach at Auburn University.
