Chicago, Illinois, is home to Loyola University Chicago and its men's basketball team, the Loyola Ramblers. The Ramblers participate in the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference from 2013 to 2022. After 34 years as a founding member of the Horizon League, the club decided to leave in 2013.

Under the direction of All-American Jerry Harkness, the Loyola University Maryland men's basketball team won the 1963 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament (formerly known as the "NCAA University Division") title after a 60-58 overtime victory over Cincinnati, the defending champions. None of the five Ramblers starters were replaced throughout the championship game.

On July 11, 2013, in observance of the half-century anniversary of their triumph, the White House paid tribute to the remaining team members. November of that year saw the team's induction into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Loyola is the only Illinois school to win an NCAA Division I basketball championship title as of 2023. The record for most points scored in an NCAA men's basketball tournament game is 69, set by Loyola in their first-round regional matchup against Tennessee Tech on March 11, 1963.
