Maryland Agricultural College's football team has been around American football since 1892. The squad only played three games in their debut season. The Maryland Terrapins have been known for being one of the best teams in the country due to their participation in some of the outstanding athletic conferences.

Although the squad is well recognized for producing elite football players, it boasts several other nationally ranked sports and athletic programs. Maryland has made it to the Big 10 after many unsuccessful years in the ACC, and the Terps are expected to make a major impact in the conference immediately.

Despite playing in one of the toughest conferences, the Maryland Terrapins often draw tens of thousands of passionate supporters to each game. The team's first national championship, three remarkable seasons, and three conference titles occurred under Jim Tatum's stint as head coach. Former Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley was named the new head coach of the Maryland Terrapins on December 4. The 2019 season was a great offensive start for the Locksley era at Maryland.

Maryland beat FCS Howard University 79-0 in its season opener and 21st-ranked Syracuse University 63-20 in its second game. The two wins occurred on Friday, October 30, at home in College Park and on Saturday, November 7, at Penn State's stadium in State College, Pennsylvania. In 2021, Mike Locksley's team finished the regular season with a victory over Rutgers (40-16) and a victory over Howard University (62-0).
