Three of North America's most prominent junior ice hockey leagues come together to form the Canadian Hockey League, and their national championship is the Memorial Cup. The winners of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and the Western Hockey League (WHL) compete in a round-robin tournament with a fourth club that rotates between the three leagues every year. 

To remember the brave men and women who gave their lives fighting in World War I, Captain James T. Sutherland created the Memorial Cup trophy. In remembrance of all Canadian soldiers who have died while serving their country, it was rededicated during the 2010 competition. In 1919, the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) presented what is now known as the Junior Ice Hockey Champion of Canada with a trophy that had previously been named the OHA Memorial Cup. Until 1971, the Memorial Cup was given out after a string of playoffs at the league, provincial, and regional levels, with the winners advancing to an east-west championship. Any Junior A team in the nation may enter. 

The pandemic canceled the 2020 Memorial Cup in Kelowna and forced the OHL to scrap plans to host the 2021 tournament. The Ontario Hockey League season was postponed owing to provincial constraints, and the host was not announced. For the 2020–21 season, just one Canadian Hockey League league—the QMJHL—announced a champion. In 2022, play for the Memorial Cup tourney got back underway.
