The Grizzlies have been a part of the Big Sky Conference since its formation in 1963. Washington-Grizzly Stadium at the University of Montana campus in 2016 averaged 25,377 fans per game.

They were the most successful college football program, with 119 victories in the 2000s and the third-most in the 1990s. At Seattle's Husky Stadium, Montana stunned the 20th-ranked (FBS) Washington Huskies on September 4, 2021.
