Since 1906, the National Western Stock Exhibition has been an annual cattle show and festival held at the National Western Complex. Its primary goal was to show local stockmen better breeding and feeding procedures. As founding members, Elias M. Ammons, president of the Colorado Cattle and Horse Growers Association and later governor of Colorado, George Ballentine, general manager of the Denver Union Stock Yard Company, and Fred P. Johnson, editor of the Record Stockman, were among those.

It has become the world's largest stock show by several animals and the only carload and pen cattle show since its inception in 1906. The exhibition was originally limited to livestock from the western United States, but by 1908, it had extended to include entrants worldwide. In 1908, a horse show was added as an annual event, followed by a rodeo in 1931. In 1925, a 4-H event called the 4-H Roundup was staged with the stock show. By 1981, the organization had acquired several structures, over twenty acres of stockyards, several acres of parking, and a total asset base of around $5 million.

The Draft Horse Show & Pull, FUSE Open Horse Events, Mules Shows, Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, and Hunters & Jumpers are among the largest horse shows in the world, with over 18,000 entries in 2006.
