The National Basketball Association organizes the NBA Summer League, alternatively referred to as the Las Vegas Summer League, as an off-season basketball competition. In the summer, NBA clubs test out different lineups than they use during the regular season. These lineups may include rookies, sophomores, and players from the G League. Along with the Las Vegas Summer League, the present NBA Summer League also includes the Salt Lake City Summer League and the California Classic.

There have been years when the Orlando Pro Summer League and the Utah Jazz Summer League included NBA clubs; when both leagues and their host cities are referenced together, the name NBA Summer League is often used. Seasonal teams have been around for a long time. In the past, there was no set hierarchy; instead, several leagues occasionally overlap without being officially coordinated.

Except for 2005 and 2011, the Orlando Pro Summer League ran annually from 2002 to 2017. As of 2019, 32 teams participated in the league's most popular event, the Las Vegas Summer League, which debuted in 2004. On July 1-3, 2019, at Golden 1 Center, the Kings held their second annual California Classic Summer League. The franchise revealed the roster for the 2019 tournament. The format consisted of four teams: the Kings, the Warriors, the Lakers, and the Heat, with each club playing twice daily.
