The Richmond Flying Squirrels are in the Minor Leagues and call the city of Richmond, Virginia, their home. The Diamond is home to the Eastern League franchise, the Double-A affiliate of the major league San Francisco Giants. Since 2010, the Flying Squirrels have been a Giants affiliate, making their longest-running current affiliation in the Giants organization among teams that the Giants do not own. Formerly known as the Connecticut Defenders, the Squirrels changed their name in 2014.

On December 1, 2009, a new logo for the Flying Squirrels was introduced. The Richmond logo features a black, red, and gray flying squirrel with an "R" (for Richmond) embroidered on an acorn over its chest.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels moniker was decided during an October 15, 2009, "name-the-team" contest held by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Prince George, Virginia's Brad Mead suggested the name.

After the Richmond Braves of the Triple-A International League moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 2009, now known as the Gwinnett Stripers, the Flying Squirrels symbolized the return of affiliated baseball to Richmond after an absence of one year.

The Flying Squirrels joined the Double-A Northeast as part of Major League Baseball's 2021 reorganization of the Minor Leagues. Following the 2021 restructuring, the Double-A Northeast resumed its former identity as the Eastern League in 2022.
