The Southern Miss Golden Eagles football team represents the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. They play collegiate football within the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Currently belonging to the Sun Belt Conference, the Eagles play their home games at M. M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Under Ronald Slay, Southern Miss initially assembled a football squad in 1912. Former USM assistant Jay Hopson was hired in January 2016 as the Golden Eagles head coach from Alcorn State. In his first year in charge, Hopson guided the Golden Eagles to a 7–6 record, a bowl triumph, and the first victory against an SEC opponent since Jeff Bower's 2000 squad by defeating Kentucky in the season opener. Despite accepting their spot in the 2017 Independence Bowl, Southern Miss was defeated 42-13 by Florida State. In January 2020, they annihilated Tulane in the Armed Forces Bowl. Following an upsetting early-season loss to South Alabama 32–21 in Hattiesburg, Jay Hopson abruptly resigned the following Monday. According to Athletic Director Jeremy McClain, Co-offensive Coordinator and WR coach Scotty Walden has taken over as temporary head coach.
