Texas Christian University (TCU) fields a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football team called the Horned Frogs. In 1896, they had their first season. Amon G. Carter Stadium, where the team plays its home games, can hold 45,000. They all wear purple and white uniforms. Super Frog is the Frogs' official mascot. The squad now has Jeremiah Donati serving as the athletic director. The head coach is Sonny Dykes.

Since both universities are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and were long-time members of the SWC before its breakup, the rivalry with SMU is particularly strong. The SMU-TCU football game is known as "The Battle for the Iron Skillet," the victor receives a commemorative cast-iron skillet.

Since the school's inception in 1915 and the start of football competition, there have only been four years (1919, 1920, 2006, and 2020) in which both schools still need to field a football team. There will be interscholastic competition between the schools until at least 2023. After 2023, it is still being determined if yearly meetings will be held because they will no longer be part of the same conference. Through the 2021 season, TCU will hold a 51-42-7 series lead.
