As a men's basketball team, the Temple Owls play as a representative of Temple University. The Owls are members of the American Athletic Conference and play in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Liacouras Center, they host their home games under the direction of head coach Adam Fisher.

The Owls have had little success since joining the American Athletic Conference 2013. Only in 2016 and 2019 have they made it to the NCAA Tournament. It was reported after the 2018 season that Aaron McKie, a former standout for the Owls and then-assistant coach, would replace Dunphy in 2019. Several former players have gone on to play in the National Basketball Association, including Mark Macon, Juan Ignacio Sanchez, Eddie Jones, Lavoy Allen, Aaron McKie, Tim Perry, and Mardy Collins.

In their long-running rivalry with Villanova, Penn, Saint Joseph's, and La Salle, the Owls have maintained their status as one of the five major Philadelphia institutions known as the Big 5. At 27, the Owls are just behind Villanova in Big Five championships. While all three teams have the same number of championships, Villanova has more individual titles. The last time the Owls were champions of the Big Five was in 2000–01. Going 3-1 in Big Five play and splitting the title with Villanova, the Owls earned their most recent Big 5 title in 2022-23.
