The University of Wisconsin–Madison is represented in American football by the Wisconsin Badgers. Camp Randall Stadium, where the team plays its home games, is the fourth-oldest in collegiate football. Wisconsin's football team has won 700 games, making it one of only 26 collegiate teams. Since the 1990s, the program has consistently ranked high on lists of the most successful programs. Alan Ameche and Ron Dayne are Wisconsin's only Heisman Trophy winners, and eleven former Badgers have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

There have been 34 bowl games played by the Badgers, with a 19-15 record. Their most recent appearance was a bowl game in the 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The 2015 Outback Bowl victory over Auburn ended the Badgers' four-game bowl losing streak and marked the 21st straight year they played in a postseason bowl game. Paul Chryst's teams won the first four bowls they entered before losing by one point in the 2020 Rose Bowl. Nonetheless, they have won eight of the last nine bowl games.

Wisconsin has participated in the Big Ten Conference since it was founded in 1896. After leaving in 1906, Michigan returned to the league in 1917. There are currently 14 teams in the Big Ten, with the departure of Chicago in 1939 and the subsequent additions of Michigan State (1953), Penn State (1993), Nebraska (2011), Maryland, and Rutgers (2014).
