The Women's Collegiate World Series (WCWS) is the pinnacle of American collegiate softball's premier event, the NCAA Division I. A double-elimination tournament kicks off the WCWS, which features eight teams. Put another way, after two losses, a team is out of the tournament. The Division I WCWS National Champion is decided after a best-of-three series between the last two teams left after six teams have been eliminated.

Norman, Oklahoma's USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium, is the site of the WCWS. The Women's College World Series was used to promote the women's collegiate softball championship from 1969 to 1981. The series was played in Norman, Oklahoma, from 1980 to 1982 by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) after being played in Omaha from 1969 to 1979.

Before moving the 1988–1989 Division I tournament to Sunnyvale, California, the NCAA staged its first six tournaments in Omaha from 1982–1987. Except for 1996, when it was staged at the softball venue for the future Olympic Games in Columbus, Georgia, the tournament has been held annually in Oklahoma City after that.

During the 1981–1982 academic year, the NCAA expanded its championship program to include twelve more women's sports, including softball, as the two organizations fought for control of women's university athletics. In addition to the twelve sports above, the AIAW kept up its long-running championship program.
