SummerSlam is an annual professional wrestling event produced by WWE, the largest professional wrestling promotion in the world, since 1988. "The Biggest Party of the Summer" is the second-largest event of the year for WWE, behind WrestleMania, their main event. It ranks high among the company's five most important events of the year.

New York City's Madison Square Garden hosted the first SummerSlam on August 29, 1988. Held at the original Wembley Stadium in London, England, the 1992 event was the business's first major pay-per-view (PPV) to take place outside of North America. With a claimed attendance of 80,355, WWE considers this their sixth-greatest live gate in history as of April 2023.

Since SummerSlam initially moved to July 2022, it has never been hosted in August; however, in 2023, SummerSlam returned in August. Until the 2023 event, which also became WWE's highest-grossing non-WrestleMania event, surpassed it, the 2021 SummerSlam was the highest-grossing SummerSlam of all time.

Returning to its August tradition, SummerSlam 2023 was set to take place on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. Earning more than WrestleMania, the 2023 event would surpass the previous record set by the 2021 event as the highest-grossing SummerSlam ever.
