Lawrence Gene David (July 2, 1947) is an American comedian, writer, actor, and TV director born in Brooklyn, New York City. David served as head writer and executive producer for the initial seven seasons of the Jerry Seinfeld–created television comedy Seinfeld. With the creation and scripting of the HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which he stars as a fictionalized version of himself, he garnered greater prominence.

In 1993, David was honored with two Primetime Emmys for his work on Seinfeld: one for Outstanding Comedy Series and another for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing for a Comedy Series. He transitioned from stand-up comedy to television comedy, where he wrote and starred on Fridays (ABC) and had a brief stint as a writer for Saturday Night Live.

Three Golden Globes and twenty-seven Primetime Emmys have been extended to him. The Writers Guild of America's Laurel Award went to him in 2010, while in 2004, he was chosen as the 23rd-greatest comedy star ever in a British poll to choose "The Comedian's Comedian" by his fellow comedians and comedy insiders. Fish in the Dark (2015), a humorous play in which he also starred, was his Broadway debut.

Since 2015, his Saturday Night Live appearances have included his impersonation of Bernie Sanders, the U.S. presidential contender for 2016 and 2020—and his sixth cousin once removed.
