The Sound of Music is a popular American musical. Richard Rodgers wrote the music, Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the lyrics, and Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse wrote the original book. In 1949, Maria von Trapp published her autobiography, from which this musical took the adaptation.

Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel starred in the original 1959 Broadway production, which received five Tony Award nominations and won five, including the Best Musical. The Palace Theatre in London had its world premiere in 1961. Since then, there have been several successful productions and revivals of the performance. 

The Sound of Music was the last musical written by Hammerstein and Rodgers. The film adaptation, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Oscars in 1965, including Best Picture. Oscar Hammerstein died of stomach cancer a few months after the premiere of the musical.

From July to September 2013, an outdoor theatre show was staged in Regent's Park at the Open Air Theatre. Michael Xavier played Captain von Trapp, and Charlotte Wakefield and Caroline Keiff played Maria and Elsa, respectively. It earned rave reviews and became the highest-grossing play ever at the venue.

Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide were all on the itinerary for the Lloyd Webber production's 2016 Australian tour, directed by Sams. Maria was played by Amy Lehpamer, Captain Von Trapp by Cameron Daddo, Baroness Schraeder by Marina Prior, and Frau Schmidt by Lorraine Bayly. Arlene Phillips was responsible for the choreography.
