Super Soul Musical The Wiz, The text for the musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was written by William F. Brown, and the music and lyrics were written by Charlie Smalls (and others). The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is updated for a modern African-American audience. It first ran at Baltimore's Morris A. Mechanic Theatre on October 21, 1974, before transferring to fresh York City's Majestic Theatre on January 5, 1975, with a fresh cast.

Seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, were given out for the 1975 Broadway production. The play marked an early instance of success for an all-black cast on Broadway. It has been revived in New York, London, San Diego, and the Netherlands, and in June 2009, Encores! offered a limited revival of the show at the New York City Center.

Tarik Frimpong played The Scarecrow in a production at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre from November 24, 2021, to January 16, 2022. The BBC aired the performances as part of the Big Night of Musicals sponsored by the National Lottery, and the production was filmed and streamed for an encore performance.
