The arena was opened on November 28, 2003, with a seating capacity of around 15,000 (Concerts), 14,091 (Basketball), 13,141 (Ice Hockey), 13,011 (Arena Football). The arena is owned by the City of Jacksonville and operated by SMG. The architect of the venue was designed by HOK Sport (now Populous).

The first artist who performed at the Arena was Elton John, which was the first concert that was held at the venue ever after its opening. The show took place in November 2003.
