Barenaked Ladies, BNL, is a Canadian rock band founded in Scarborough, Ontario, a Toronto suburb in 1988. In 1991, the band's self-titled cassette became the first independent record in Canada to be certified gold, solidifying their growing fan base in the country. 

On the strength of their 1992 Reprise Records debut album Gordon—which featured the hits "If I Had $1000000" and "Brian Wilson"—they achieved widespread recognition in Canada. Following the release of "Brian Wilson" and "The Old Apartment" on the band's live album Rock Spectacle (1996) and their fourth studio album, Stunt (1998), the band's fame began to grow in the United States.

With the addition of brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and Tyler Stewart in 1990, the band expanded from its original duet of Ed Robertson and Steven Page to a quintet. Kevin Hearn took Andy Creeggan's place in the band after he left in 1995. After Page's departure in 2009, the band was down to four members.

Originally playing just acoustic music, the band swiftly expanded their sound to include pop, rock, hip-hop, and rap as their career progressed.  During their live performances, the band members engage in humorous banter and sometimes freestyle rap between songs. Along with two Grammy Award nominations, they have won several Juno Awards. In March 2018, the band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Their albums and singles have sold over 15 million copies.
