Godsmack is an American rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Shannon Larkin, Tony Rombola, Robbie Merrill, and Sully Erna. After Richards resigned in 1996 after discovering he had a six-year-old child and Stewart left due to personal disagreements, Tony Rombola joined as the guitarist. All Wound Up, the band's debut album, was recorded in Boston's New Alliance Studio that year. The band's self-released CD, produced in three days for $2,600, was issued by their label, E. K. Records Company, in February 1997.

Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin revealed on an episode of "The Metal Teddy Bear Experience" that the band planned to release a single album in 2022. After finishing recording their new album, Sully Erna told WJRR on April 23, 2022, that their new single will likely be released in the middle to late summer and that this album could be their last.

The band dropped their "Surrender" single on September 28, 2022. In an interview with Pablo from 93X Radio, which aired shortly after the new single dropped, Sully Erna confirmed that the album's title would be Lighting Up the Sky and that it would be the band's final album. On November 11, 2022, a second single from "You and I" was released. On February 24, 2023, the album was finally released.
