In 1994, former members of American rock bands Rodan, Lungfish, Rex, and Hoover got together to form June of 44. The band's name is a reference to the time when Henry Miller and Anas Nin exchanged letters. This band did a lengthy tour that took them to Australia and back. The group, which was formed in 1994 but split up in 2000, is back together again as of 2018. Post-hardcore and math rock form the foundation of their sound, but subsequent albums expand into areas such as experimental jazz, ambient dub, and angular post-punk.

Engine's 1995 debut album "Engine Takes to the Water" was compared to Slint and Will Oldham. Comparisons to Tortoise and The For Carnation surfaced in the next year's Tropics and Meridians. As a side project, drummer Doug Scharin formed HiM, occasionally including bassist Fred Erskine; later, Scharin formed the experimental group Out in Worship. Meadows also collaborated with Tara Jane O'Neill to establish the band, Sonora Pine.

Before disbanding in 1999, June of 44 released three more albums that featured more electronic and jazz-influenced elements. Guitarist/vocalist Jeff Mueller formed Shipping News, singer Sean Meadows formed Everlasting the Way, and then Letter E. Erskine joined Abilene. Scharin remained with HiM and occasionally guested with other groups. The band got back together in 2018, and in 2020 they dropped a new album called Revisionist: Adaptations & Future Histories in the Time of Love and Survival.
