Styx is an American rock band that formed in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. Some of their signature sounds are melodic hard rock guitar and acoustic guitar blends, synths and acoustic piano, power ballads and uplifting tunes, and elements of international musical theater. Having been well-known in the 1970s for their progressive rock style, the band started incorporating pop music and soft rock aspects in the 1980s.

With 1977's The Grand Illusion, Styx finally broke through in the North American market. The album peaked at No. 6 in the U.S. and Canada and was the first of four consecutive multi-platinum albums for the band in the U.S. A top-ten smash in both nations, "Come Sail Away," was featured on it. In all, 16 of Styx's singles peaked in the top 40, and eight of their songs reached the top ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. 

Ricky Phillips' decision to spend more time at home and less on the road was publicized via social media on March 20, 2024. On March 22, 2024, at a concert in Wallingford, CT, Terry Gowan—the younger brother of Lawrence Gowan—made his debut as the new touring bass player for Styx. His formal membership was revealed on May 17.
