The Avett Brothers is an American folk rock band. The current lineup consists of Seth Avett, Scott Avett, Bob Crawford, Joe Kwon, and Mike Marsh. Following the success of their Live at the Double Door Inn live CD, the brothers took some time to record a new studio album.

After a local record label owner named Dolph Ramseur saw the band perform and liked what he heard, he started working with them. They spent 70 hours in the studio making the album A Carolina Jubilee, published in 2003 on Ramseur Records.

The band announced on June 29, 2020, that the release date for The Third Gleam (also stylized as The Gleam III) will be August 28, 2020. It was released to mostly positive reviews and promoted with two drive-in concerts at the Charlotte Motor Speedway to let people put some distance between themselves and the pandemic.

A cover of "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie was published by the Avett Brothers on Friday, October 30, 2020, just four days before the 2020 United States presidential election. The band announced in August 2019 that Swept Away, a musical based on their music, had its world premiere in June 2020 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre that was later posponed.
