The Major League Soccer All-Star event is an annual soccer event hosted by Major League Soccer that pits chosen league players against overseas clubs or players from other leagues. At first, Major League Soccer followed the same pattern as other North American sports leagues and pitted the Eastern Conference against the Western Conference in an all-star game. 

If the teams are deadlocked at the end of regulation, there is no 30-minute overtime; instead, a penalty shootout is played. A skills challenge competition that debuted in 2018 is held before the match. It contains several events competed by three-player teams. When it first debuted in 2014 under Homegrown Game, the Major League Soccer Next All-Star Game ran in tandem with the All-Star Game.

The 2018 edition of the Major League Soccer All-Star Skills Challenge is a freestyle soccer event where three-person teams compete in minigames, including a passing-and-shooting challenge, a shooting accuracy battle, and a touch-and-volley goal demonstration. Before its 2001 retirement, the skills challenge included events such as "goalie wars" and soccer tennis, among others.
