Since 1928, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships have been conducted annually. Individuals in ten weight classes compete in the double-elimination NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Each weight class qualifies thirty-three wrestlers through seven conference championship competitions.

The NCAA Wrestling Championships determine the All-American wrestlers for each weight class and the national champion in each weight class. All-American status is awarded to the top eight competitors in each weight class. The top four teams receive team trophies and podium results. Team scoring has been an official part of the NCAA Wrestling Championships since 1934.

In 13 years, from 1928 to 1940, Ed Gallagher led the Cowboys to 11 victories, including their first championship in 1928. With 24 NCAA titles, Iowa has won the second-most team championships. From 1978 to 1986, Iowa's nine-year winning streak was the longest under head coach Dan Gable. Penn State has won 11 championships, Iowa State has won 8 championships, and Oklahoma has won 7 titles.

Since 2000, the tournament has moved from its traditional location on host college campuses to professional sports facilities in major cities due to its explosive growth in popularity.
