The Tampa Bay Lightning play professional ice hockey in Tampa, Florida. It plays in the NHL's Eastern Conference, specifically the Atlantic Division. 2003–2004, the squad dominated the NHL and won the Stanley Cup. Amalie Arena in Tampa is where they host their home games.

The name "Bolts" describes the team as well. Ownership of the team rests with Tampa Bay Sports & Entertainment. On October 7, 1992, Expo Hall in Tampa, Florida, opened its doors for the first time to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a regular-season game.

When Manon Rheaume played goalkeeper for the Tampa Bay Lightning in their training game in opposition to the St. Louis Blues, she made history as the first woman to play in a major North American sports league. In their fourth year, 1995–96, the squad made the playoffs after going 38–32–12 and accumulating 88 points.

Since its inception in 1992, the team has captured the Stanley Cup once and the Southeast Division twice (2002–03 and 2003–04). The playoffs' Most Valuable Player award, the Conn Smythe, went to Brad Richards. Lightning always wears blue and white uniforms. The Tampa Bay Lightning mascot, ThunderBug, appears and performs during the game.

In April 2024, the Lightning secured a playoff berth for the eighth year following defeats suffered by the Washington Capitals, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Detroit Red Wings. 

They lost in five games to the eventual Stanley Cup winners and intrastate rivals, the Florida Panthers, in the first round of the playoffs. Mitchell Chaffee, a forward for the Lightning, re-signed with the team in May 2024 to a two-year extension with a budget hit of $800,000. 

The Lightning extended the contract of defenseman Declan Carlile for another two years in June 2024. J.J. Moser, also a defenseman with the Lightning, extended his contract for another two years in July 2024 for another two years at a budget hit of $3.375 million.

Following many significant departures, the Tampa Bay Lightning are concentrated on retooling during the 2024 preseason. Veteran players like Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov still anchor the squad despite these changes; younger players like Nick Perbix are filling increasingly important roles, especially on defense. 

Particularly with their power play, the Lightning have also tried fresh strategies to stay competitive. Aiming to remain among the top Eastern Conference contenders, the Lightning have displayed flashes of their past championship prowess as they work on developing chemistry with fresh arrivals.
