The Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Jeff Schroeder, Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha, and Billy Corgan. The band's first studio album, Gish, was recorded in 1991 at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, with a budget of $20,000. Corgan often played all the instruments in the band save the drums to achieve the uniformity he sought, much to the chagrin of his fellow musicians.

After a busy 2019 on the road, Corgan announced in January 2020 that the band was working on 21 new songs for an upcoming album. The album Cyr was published on November 27, 2020, through the band's new record company, Sumerian Records. The single and video for the song "Cyr" were released on August 28, 2020. 'Confessions of a Dopamine Addict' and 'Wrath' were included in the band's latest single, Cyr, released on September 25, 2020.

The band announced the Rock Invasion 2 Tour on social media on February 22, 2022. The tour was scheduled for spring 2020, then fall 2020, and was ultimately canceled due to the pandemic. The Spirits on Fire tour, featuring Jane's Addiction, was announced in May of 2022.
